What Dofurin 50 mg tablets is and what it is used for

Active substance of the medicine Dofurin 50 mg tablets is furazidin (nitrofuran derivative). Dofurin 50 mg tablets is antibacterial medicine with bacteriostatic action, which is active against both Gram-positive (Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus faecalis) and Gram-negative microorganisms (Enterobacteriaceae – Salmonella, Shigella, Klebsiella, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter etc.), including bacterias resistant to sulphonamides. They are inactive against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and most Proteus spp.

Therapeutic indications

Treatment of acute and chronic non-complicated lower urinary tract infections: pyelonephritis, cystitis, prostatitis, urethritis, and urinary postoperative infections: postoperative pyelonephritis, cystitis and prostatitis, and frequent recurrent infections in women caused by Escherichia coli.

How to take Dofurin 50 mg tablets

Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Check with your doctor if you are not sure.

Treatment of acute infections

Adults and children above 14 years
The first day of the treatment: 100 mg (two tablets) four times daily (maximally eight tablets daily); the following days: 100 mg (two tablets) thrice daily (six tablets daily). The drug is used for 7-10 days. If necessary, the treatment can be repeated after 10-15 days.

Children aged 2 to 14 years
5-7 mg/kg body weight/day in 2-3 divided doses (the tablet may be crushed and mixed with milk).
The drug is used for 7-8 days. If necessary, the treatment can be repeated after 10-15 days.
The drug should be preferably taken orally with lot of liquids and during the meals, particularly those containing proteins, since they increase furazidin availability.

Dofurin 50 mg tablets are yellow-orange, scored on one side of the tablet. The score is not intended to divide the dose.
